In what is significant news for cruisers in Ireland the previous advice to avoid cruising has now been REMOVED from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade travel advice.
There is no now reference to cruising and we’ve had this confirmed!! In theory cruisers in Ireland can now step onto a cruise ship!!!
The primary reason for this change? The decision on the 15 September by the Government that they would support the European Commission’s proposal for a common approach to travel within the EU / EEA!! The EU has no ban on cruising and the realities of this is that cruise lines such as MSC Cruises, Costa, Hapag-Lloyd Cruises, TUI Cruises - Mein Schiff, Ponant, AIDA and more have resumed across Europe!!
While Ireland will not fully embrace the EU stance until it’s signed off in October they have made moves to align to it - hence the new green list and now the stance on cruise!!
BUT MAJOR HURDLES REMAIN!
The DFA are keen to remind us that “The general advisory to avoid non-essential travel remains in place, except to countries on the Green List which have a ‘normal precautions’ security rating.”
Not forgetting of course that many countries, including those on the Green List, are imposing their own restrictions on people travelling from Ireland due to our high rates! The reality is we HAVE to get our rates down in order to move around our own country, let alone anywhere else!!!! Bottom line!!
Right now there are just 4 countries on the Green List - Cyprus, Finland, Latvia and Lichtenstein - hardly cruising capitals of the world!! 🤔
THE GOOD NEWS? HOPE FOR FUTURE!
But the GREAT news is that in October it is expected that Ireland adopt the EU approach which means free movement between those counties on the green AND the Orange list!!
If the Orange list was in play today? Then you could travel to countries such as Italy, Germany, Greece, Norway and more.... much more like it!!!
So therefore you could, in theory, under the proposed EU approach, travel to say Italy or a Greece and board a cruise. If that cruise did not take in any other countries then you could return to Ireland and NOT have to quarantine!!
WHY ARE WE EXCITED?
We are NOT suddenly suggesting that you all go book a cruise to Italy next month... we are not saying that all is well in the world again! Far from it! Not in cruise, not in Ireland, not in the world!! Let’s keep things in perspective! We love cruise but we know there are more important issues in the world!
BUT we are excited because we know that Costa have stated they are open to passengers from Ireland from the end of September and MSC we believe are open to Irish passengers sailing also if restrictions are lifted!!
We are excited because ONE significant barrier has now been lifted and will remain lifted due to the more positive EU stance on cruising!
Now, wash your hands, wear your masks, keep your distance and practice good old fashioned common sense... let’s get this virus down so we can get moving forward again... that may just involve stepping onboard again soon!! 😍
HAPPY FRIDAY!! #CruiseRestart
